A brothel madam has been forced to hand over £39,000 of the cash she earned illegally. Jun Liao Inns, 35, of Ladybeck Close in Leeds city centre, was told by Wakefield magistrates she must forfeit the money under the Proceeds of Crime Act.
Inns was found guilty in November 2007 of keeping a brothel used for prostitution and was sentenced to nine months in prison, suspended for 12 months. Following the hearing, a confiscation order was made in June 2009, stating she must pay £23,740 of her earnings into court. She was given two months to pay.
However, in August last year, following a tip off, officers seized a further £80,000 Inns had withdrawn from a bank in Oldham. From this money, officers paid the confiscation order and debts owed to Leeds City Council and the Department of Work and Pensions.
Det Con Pete Kilbride, who lead the investigation, said: "This seizure of cash is a perfect example of how the Proceeds of Crime Act works for the benefit of the public. It has allowed us to seize funds we would otherwise have been unable to get hold of. Seizing cash and assets from criminals allows us to fund community projects and further police operations to tackle crime."
