TWO Polish men accused of running a brothel and trafficking women have appeared back at Plymouth Magistrates' Court to face new charges. Piotr Krupa, aged 25, allegedly raped a woman in the city between July 15 and August 1 last year.
He and 25-year-old Michael Barcicki are jointly charged with trafficking a woman within the United Kingdom for the purpose of prostitution between the same dates. They are also jointly accused of controlling a prostitute in the expectation of gain between the same dates.
Magistrates were told that the rape charge was so serious that it had to be sent directly to the Crown Court. All other matters were transferred to the senior court. No pleas have been indicated on the new charges.
Krupa and Barcicki were remanded in custody until they face a judge on May 12.
The pair have previously pleaded not guilty to four previous joint charges: keeping, managing or assisting in managing a brothel in Sydney Street, Stonehouse; trafficking a woman in the UK for sexual exploitation; trafficking another woman in the same way; and controlling prostitution for gain.
All those offences are alleged to have happened between May 17 and June 15 last year.
Krupa, previously of Carlisle Road, Whitleigh, and Barcicki, formerly of Sydney Street, gave their address as Exeter Prison.
