Romanian sex workers to be deported for immigration offences

Postby admin » 30 Jun 2017, 21:25

THREE Romanian women are to be deported following the discovery of two brothels at separate locations in Swindon. Police went to houses in Valleyside and Stafford Street yesterday at around 8.45pm after it came to light that women were advertising sex over the internet.

Three Romanian women were at the address in Valleyside along with a Romanian man. All three women had been advertising sex work online via a website called adultworks. The women were spoken to and no offences of trafficking or coercion were disclosed.

Police say they were very open about their sex work and confirmed the profiles on adultworks were their own, which they had set up and paid for. The women said they had never had any bad experiences and that they do sex work of their own volition because they can earn more money than they would in Romania. The man claimed he was just visiting and was due to go back to Romania on Monday.

All three women were arrested for brothel offences and are currently in custody at Gablecross Police Station where they will be transferred to an immigration centre and deported back to Romania.

Two of the three women had been visited by Wiltshire Police's HEET (Human Exploitation and Emerging Threats) team in April 2017 and given warnings about operating a brothel. Despite the warnings the sex work continued.

SEX-WORK campaigners have slammed police and government officials after three Romanian women were arrested in town centre brothels last week. Activists from Swindon’s Green Party youth branch have joined with national group Sex Worker Advocacy and Resistance Movement (SWARM) to protest the move.

They say that the arrests, which were carried out by officers from Wiltshire Police and the Home Office last Thursday, could be against European law.

According to police, two houses in Valleyside, off Kingshill, and Stafford Street, off Eastcott Hill, were raided on Thursday at 8.45pm. Three Romanian women, aged 18, 21 and 28 were detained at the Valleyside house by immigration officers for “failing to exercise their treaty rights as required by EU law”.

All three women had been advertising sex work online, via an adult website. Police said that all three women were open about their sex work and had advertised their services themselves. Police had previously visited two of the women and given them warnings about operating a brothel. Despite these warnings the sex work continued.

It is believed that the women were taken to a detention centre before being removed to Romania. It is suspected by campaigners that the women were taken to Yarl’s Wood detention centre, although this was not confirmed by the Home Office.
