Trafficking ring forced girl, 14, into prostitution

Postby admin » 12 May 2017, 22:09

A girl has told how she was trafficked to the UK from Romania at the age of 14 and forced to work as a prostitute on the streets of Paddington.

She was physically and verbally abused by a gang who threatened to hurt her family at home if she refused to comply, a court heard. She saw up to 15 clients a day.

In a statement the girl, now 15, said: “They would slap me, push me and grab my hair. Many times I was left with bruises and marks on my body.”

The investigation into the Romanian trafficking network was sparked when a 41-year-old woman raised the alarm after escaping from a brothel in Paddington.

She had been enticed to London with the promise of a restaurant job but was forced to work as a street prostitute. Police investigating the gang found the teenager at a hotel.

In her statement, she added: “I was forced to have sex continuously.”

Nine victims of the gang were prepared to give evidence against the crime group. Romanians Romelia Radu, 32, Petre Niculescu, 39, and George Maracineanu, 47, were facing lengthy jail sentences today after admitting trafficking and prostitution charges at an earlier hearing at Kingston crown court.

A Romanian couple have been jailed for trafficking a 14-year-old girl and other women into prostitution in the UK, in the first prosecution for child sex trafficking under the 2015 Modern Slavery Act.

Romelia Florentina Radu, 32, and Petre Niculescu, 39, were each sentenced to 14 years in prison after they pleaded guilty to trafficking the child and eight women.

A third Romanian national, George Maracineanu, 47, who persuaded a woman to come to the UK, promising her love and work before handing her over to the couple, was jailed for two years and eight months.

The criminal network run by Radu and Niculescu was dismantled by the Metropolitan police and Romanian police after an eight-month joint operation.

The trial at Kingston crown court in Surrey heard that the group preyed on women from impoverished backgrounds, telling some they would be given work in shops or restaurants.

“The defendants benefited criminally from the sexual exploitation of a number of women,” prosecution counsel Caroline Haughey told the court. “They beguiled and deceived their way into their lives and them put them to work on the streets.”
