2 to stand trial accused of running a brothel in Dorking

Postby admin » 23 Feb 2017, 20:18

A Dorking resident and a fellow Chinese national are to go on trial accused of running a brothel at Guildford Crown Court. Bin Zhang, 32, of no fixed abode, and Shujing Chang, 45, of High Street, Dorking, were each charged on three counts.

The first count was that Zhang and Chang were keeping a brothel used for prostitution and both managed or assisted in management of a brothel involving prostitution. The second count was requiring a person to partake in forced or compulsory labour. The final count was that they both arranged or facilitated travel of a person with a view to exploitation.

Accompanied by a Mandarin interpreter, they pleaded not guilty to all three charges.

The court heard that the offences happened between January 22 and 27.

The pair are due to give a defence statement on Monday April 17 and the trial is scheduled to commence on Monday July 17.

Pair jailed for running a brothel in Dorking High Street

A man and a woman who ran a brothel in Dorking High Street for just five days before being caught have been jailed.

The pair ran the brothel in a flat above Barnard Marcus Estate Agents in the town centre between January 22 and 27 this year where they advertised a variety of sexual services that were available with three East Asian women.

Bin Zhang, 32, and Shujing Chang, 45, were jailed today (Tuesday) at Guildford Crown Court after pleading guilty to one count of keeping a brothel for prostitution.

The pair originally pleaded not guilty to the charge in February but then changed their plea before they were sentenced today by Judge Roger Chapple.

Prosecuting the case, Hannah Duncan told the court that online adverts began appearing from January 14, posted by Zhang, advertising "new sexy Asian girls" accompanied by a photo of a semi-naked East Asian woman.

Ms Duncan also told the court that, over the period of time concerned, staff in the estate agents below the flat noticed three East Asian women and a large number of lone men frequently coming and going from the flat.

On January 26 an officer from Surrey Police phoned the number left on one of the adverts and was told that it was "£70 for 30 minutes" with one of the girls and was given the address of the flat.

Officers booked a fake appointment and went to the flat on January 27 and found a woman wearing nothing but underwear waiting in one of the bedrooms, which had nothing but a bed and a wash bag full of condoms in.

In another room they found two more women talking to men on Facetime and in a third room they found the two defendants. Phones, laptops and cash, totalling £2,605, and 9,000 Yen, worth about £60, were all seized from the flat.

Ms Duncan said that, on the phones, numerous texts organising appointments that would involve "full sex" and other sexual acts were found with prices quoted at £70 for half an hour and £120 or £130 for an hour.

Mitigating for Zhang, Harry MacDonald said his client was a hard working businessman in China and had no previous convictions.

Mark Aldred, mitigating for Chang, said his client was coming to the end of a six week stay in the UK, stipulated by her visa, and was short of money. He also pointed out that his client had no previous convictions.

Sentencing the pair, who appeared in the dock with the assistance of a Mandarin interpreter, Judge Chapple said: "This brothel was not running for long, only about a week, and was run on a commercial basis all be it for a modest profit. It was not the most sophisticated operation but there was a degree of planning involved."

The pair were sentenced to eight months in prison, ordered to pay the mandatory surcharge of £140 each and had all of the money found at the property confiscated.

Chang and Zhang had already spent five months in prison on remand for the offences. The court heard they will likely be deported when they are released from prison.
