Jail warning to woman who ran Trowbridge brothel for 14 year

Postby admin » 19 Dec 2016, 20:06

A WOMAN who ran a brothel in the centre of Trowbridge for more than a decade has been warned she could be jailed. Marion Meyer-Smith operating the property for the purposes of prostitution from a flat in Norwood Court, off Fore Street in Trowbridge.

The 49-year-old pleaded guilty to keeping a brothel between the start of 2002 and June this year when she appeared at Swindon Crown Court.

Colin Meeke, prosecuting, said: "She derived, on her own admissions, significant sums each week: took home for her own payment from the proceeds of the work carried out."

Referring to the 14-and-a-half years the operation was running he said: "There are potentially quite large sums involved." He told the court they could pursue Meyer-Smith, who now lives in Chepstow, Monmouthshire, for any money she made from the business. As the offence is one covered under the Proceeds of Crime Act prosecutors could seek to confiscate any benefit from crime.

Robin Shellard, defending, asked for the case to be adjourned so that a pre-sentence report could be prepared on his client.

A woman who kept a brothel in the centre of Trowbridge for over 10 years has avoided a jail sentence.

Marion Meyer-Smith ran the brothel from a flat in Norwood Court, off Fore Street.

In December she pleaded guilty to keeping a brothel between January 2002 and June 2016.

Earlier today, a judge handed her a 12-month suspended sentence and community service for 80 hours.

A Proceeds of Crime hearing will take place on the 16th June, seeking to confiscate any money she made while running the brothel.

QUESTIONS are being asked after it emerged Wiltshire Police has allowed a brothel to remain open in the centre of Trowbridge for around a decade.

Swindon Crown Court heard that police visited the ‘massage parlour’ in Norwood Court, which is off Wicker Hill, last June and found two mature women, both from the local area, working in the premises with a client. Both said they were content to be working there.

Last Thursday mother-of-two Marion Meyer-Smith, of Chepstow, who managed the brothel, pleaded guilty to running it since 2002 and received a 12-month jail term suspended for two years.

Women working at the brothel were giving her half their takings, the court heard, and when she was questioned she said she would take £100 to £150 a week from the business while another person got the rest.

Passing sentence, Recorder Robert Pawson said: “Some people describe it as the oldest profession in the world but the fact is it is against the law. Whether they are trafficked or not, and I accept they were not, they are still people being exploited for sex.”

The court heard that around nine years ago a letting agent had contacted the police to tell them what was going on there and received an acknowledgement from the force.

Councillors have demanded to know why a brothel was allowed to continue in a market town - for 10 years after police were first tipped off.

Officer finally raided the 'massage parlour' as part of an operation led by the National Crime Agency into human trafficking.

They found a punter with two middle-age English women who told him they were happy working at the sex den in Trowbridge.

The madame was traced as mum-of-two Marion Meyer-Smith, 49, who admitted running the brothel in the flat for 14 years.

She raked in between £100 to £150 a week from the two sex workers, both of whom were working in their hometown.

Meyer-Smith, who lives in Chepstow, Gwent, escaped jail earlier this month with a 12-month term suspended for two years at Swindon Crown Court.

But the court heard that police had been tipped off about the brothel in Norwood Court by a local a decade earlier but failed to act until last June.
