Brothel keeper, Sydney Walsh, who lived with 93-year-old mum above central Watford sex sauna, jailed

Brothel keeper Sydney Walsh was jailed for nine months today for running prostitutes from "A Different Sauna" in Watford town centre.

Walsh, 55, lived upstairs in the Market Street property while eight Eastern European women sold sex, at different times, downstairs in number 93.

When police raided the brothel in March last year they found a large number of condoms and double beds.

One of the prostitutes said Walsh was "kind" to the girls. She said she would pay him half of the money from a massage, while she would keep all the money from the sexual services she provided.

Prosecutor Aneurin Brewer told St Albans crown court that two rooms were in use at any one time at the house.

Walsh's 91-year-old mother holds the lease on the building and lives there with her son. A police officer who visited the house last month found a prostitute was still working there.

A jury convicted Walsh of assisting in the management of a brothel. He had no convictions for brothel keeping, but had 17 previous convictions for 33 offences. These included theft and the possession and supply of drugs.

Andrew Campbell, defending, said the prostitutes working at the premises had not been trafficked. He said Walsh, a painter and decorator, now had nothing to do with what was now going on downstairs.

He said there was no evidence that Walsh was living an extravagant lifestyle, and that he did not receive extra payments for the sexual services provided.

Jailing him, Judge Andrew Bright QC said: "This was no massage parlour in the true sense. The girls were offering sex for money.

"The good people of Watford need to know when people are convicted of running a brothel action is taken.

"The message has to go out that running a brothel in the centre of Watford is a serious criminal offence and those involved can expect an immediate custodial sentence."

From the dock, Walsh pleaded with the judge: "I realise I have done something wrong. My mother is 91. She needs me very much."

The judge replied: "I have passed an immediate sentence and that is what you will serve."

Suspected brothel shut down by police

Postby admin » 30 Nov 2016, 21:06

A property in Market Street was investigated by police following complaints about anti-social behaviour and concerns that it was allegedly being used as a brothel. Officers from Watford’s Safer Neighbourhood Team executed a Closure Order at the address earlier this week, prohibiting anyone from entering the property for a three-month period. Anyone who breaches the order can be arrested.

Sydney Walsh, 57, of Market Street, was arrested on suspicion of managing a brothel and possession of class A (cocaine) and class B (cannabis) drugs. He was released on bail pending further enquiries and, on November 29, was charged with assisting in the management of a brothel and possession of a controlled drug (cannabis). He appeared at Hatfield Remand Court where he was remanded into custody to appear before Harrow Crown Court on January 3.

A 30-year-old man of no fixed address was arrested on suspicion of possession of a class A drug (cocaine) and was given a police caution. A 44-year-old man from Hemel Hempstead was arrested on suspicion of possession of a class A drug (cocaine) and was given a caution.

Support and advice was offered to six women at the property.

Neighbourhood Sergeant Tom Fisher said: “Alongside our partner agencies we have been responding to complaints about the address for several months. This type of behaviour will not be tolerated in Watford and we hope that by taking action to close the property we can provide neighbours and the wider community with some respite.

“This is great example of how the new Anti-social Behaviour Crime and Policing Act has given us greater powers so that we can take action against anti-social behaviour and improve the quality of life for our local communities. If anyone has any concerns about the behaviour at properties in their area, I would urge them to please contact police.”

A man has been handed a prison sentence after admitting keeping a brothel in Watford.

Back in November, police officers raided a property on Market Street following complaints of anti-social behaviour and concerns that it was being used as a brothel.

They arrested 57-year-old Sydney Walsh on suspicion of managing a brothel and possession of class A (cocaine) and class B (cannabis) drugs.

Walsh admitted one count of control prostitution for gain, and one count of keeping a brothel, at Harrow Crown Court on February 10.

Five further counts were ordered to rest on file.

Walsh was sentenced to 12 months in prison for keeping a brothel – reduced from 18 months for submitting an early guilty plea – and nine months for the control prostitution offence. He will serve both sentences concurrently.
