Aberdeen: Murder probe launched

Postby admin » 14 Feb 2016, 23:39

A murder inquiry has been launched following the death of a woman believed to have been involved in prostitution. Police were informed of the death of a woman in a property in Union Terrace, Aberdeen, around 1.10pm on Friday, February 12, 2016.

A major investigation to establish the full circumstances surrounding the death is ongoing and police are appealing for information from the public. Door to door inquiries continue to be carried out and officers are also reviewing CCTV footage to obtain as much information as possible.

Detective Superintendent David McLaren, from Police Scotland's Major Investigation Team who is leading the inquiry, said: "There is no doubt that this incident will raise concerns in Aberdeen and the wider community but I would like to take this opportunity to reassure the public that a significant police investigation has commenced and all efforts will be made to trace the person or people responsible.

"A priority for us is establishing the woman's recent movements, identify who she may have been in contact with and ultimately determine what happened to her prior to her being found on Friday afternoon.

"Investigations are at a very early stage however a line of inquiry at this time is the suggestion that the woman may have been involved in prostitution and as such Police Scotland is actively engaging with support groups nationally.

A man has appeared in court charged with murder after a woman was found dead in a flat in Aberdeen. The woman's body was found at the property in the city's Union Terrace on Friday afternoon. Police Scotland said it is strongly believed to be 37-year-old Jessica McGraa, from London, but formal identification is yet to take place.

Bala Wadzani Chinda, 25, from Aberdeen, made no plea or declaration when he appeared at the city's sheriff court charged with murder and theft. He was remanded in custody ahead of a further expected court appearance next week and the case was committed for further examination.

Detective Superintendent David McLaren is appealing for anyone who saw or spoke to Ms McGraa in the days before her death to contact the force.

He said: "In particular, I am appealing for anyone who was in Jessica's company or who spoke to her on Tuesday 9th, Wednesday 10th, Thursday 11th or Friday 12th February to come forward as a matter of urgency. Piecing together the events leading up to her body being discovered on Friday afternoon is crucial to our investigation.

"Jessica is also believed to have sometimes used the name Bianca so this may be a name that people are more familiar with. Although a man has been arrested and charged we continue to gather evidence and would appeal for anyone who has information to contact us."

A prostitute found dead in Aberdeen hid her double life as a prostitute from her oilman husband, he revealed last night. Gareth McGraa, 56, believed his Nigerian wife, Jessica, 37, was selling hair extensions for a living and described the pain he felt from her deception.

The couple have a six-year-old child together but split when the boy was only one year old. After that, Gareth says, they reunited several times and he had always hoped they would end up back together permanently. Gareth said his wife had been a practising Christian and a devoted mother.

Jessica documented her life of on social media. Photographs and status updates on trips to the Italian Riviera, New York and Hong Kong, designer clothes, shoes and handbags all featured on various webpages she used.

Yesterday, Bala Wadzani Chinda, 25, appeared at Aberdeen Sheriff Court accused of murder and was remanded in custody.

It is understood Jessica only returned to Scotland’s oil capital from London a couple of weeks ago, having lived and worked there in the past.

Gareth was working as a chief mechanic with Atlantic Drilling in Nigeria in 2005 when he met Jessica in a Port Harcourt bar.

A £220-an-hour prostitute from London who was found dead in an Aberdeen flat last month died from asphyxiation, it has been revealed. The death certificate for Jessica McGraa, 37, of Brent Park, North-West London, reveals that she suffocated and listed her primary cause of death as asphyxiation.

Tragic Jessica, a married mother of a six-year-old boy, led a secret life as a high class hooker offering the "ultimate girlfriend experience" to punters across the UK. But Jessica was found dead in a flat in Aberdeen on February 12 - two days after she had last logged into a website which she used to generate business. The death certificate records her time of death as 1.14pm on the day she was discovered at the property on Union Terrace in the city.

Jessica, who went by aliases Ebony Bianca and Kelly West online, would frequently show off her lavish lifestyle on social media sites as she'd jet off around the world on holiday.

Following her death, friends and family of Jessica said they had no idea she was a prostitute. And her oil worker husband Gareth, 56, was shocked to discover his estranged wife was selling sex and thought she was making her money from selling hair extensions.

They had met while Gareth was working as a chief mechanic for Atlantic Drilling in Jessica's native Nigeria in 2005. The pair later moved over to the UK to start their married lives together and spent some time living and working in Aberdeen before they split up.

Twenty-five-year Bala Chinda has made two private appearance at Aberdeen Sheriff Court charged with Jessica’s murder and theft. He made no plea or declaration, was fully committed, and remanded in custody.

The Aberdeen flat where a prostitute was allegedly murdered has gone on the market with a price tag of almost £260,000. Jessica McGraa’s lifeless body was discovered in a serviced apartment on the city’s Union Terrace on February 12. A post-mortem examination showed the mum, who had been working in the city, was suffocated. Her death certificate listed her only cause of death as asphyxiation.

Bala Chinda, 25, has since been charged with her murder and is expected to appear in court again later this year.

Last night it emerged the property she was killed in, Flat B, 16 Union Terrace, has now been put up for sale for offers over £259,000. Property particulars show the inside of the “well presented” three bedroom flat Mrs McGraa had been working from just days before she died. The apartment is part of a category B-listed granite building and contains many features traditional with Aberdeen properties such as high ceilings, plaster cornices and ornate interior pillars.

The flat, which was valued at around £265,000, has a “bright and spacious” open plan lounge and kitchen with a large bay window overlooking the front of the property and Union Terrace Gardens. Two bedrooms, facing the front of the property, are connected using specialised sliding doors with a further master bedroom located at the back of the building.

Mrs McGraa’s body was found two days after she last logged into her Adult Work profile which she used to generate business for herself in the Granite City.

The man accused of murdering a high-class prostitute at an Aberdeen flat earlier this year will make his first public court appearance this month. Jessica McGraa’s body was discovered at a serviced apartment in the city’s Union Terrace on Friday, February 12.

Following a major police investigation, 25-year-old Bala Chinda was arrested and charged with the murder. He also faced a charge of theft. During his first private court appearance at Aberdeen Sheriff Court he made no plea and was remanded in custody.

Last night it emerged Chinda’s preliminary hearing has been set for June 13 at the High Court in Glasgow. During this diet Chinda will need to tell the court how he pleads, and if he denies the allegations a trial date will be set.

Mrs McGraa’s death certificate revealed the 37-year-old had suffocated. Mrs McGraa was found two days after she last logged into a website profile which she used to generate business for herself.

The document stated that Mrs McGraa was found in on Union Terrace, but when she wasn’t working in Aberdeen, she lived in a flat on Chaplin Road, London.

A man is to stand trial charged with the rape and murder of a mum in an Aberdeen flat. Bala Chinda is accused of killing Nkechi McGraa at a flat in Union Terrace, Aberdeen on February 11 this year.

Prosecutors claim the 25 year-old forced Miss McGraa onto a bed, held her down and had sex with her. The murder charge further alleges he did “inflict blunt force trauma” to her head and neck before forcing the 36 year-old’s face into a pillow. It is said Chinda held her face there and as a result – or “by other means to the prosecutor unknown” – he did “asphyxiate” Miss McGraa.

Chinda faces a separate accusation of attempting to defeat the ends of justice. It is claimed he stole two phones and a key from Miss McGraa after the alleged rape and murder. The charge states he got rid of the mobiles as well as a handset he is said to have used to contact Miss McGraa.

Prosecutors claim this was done to “conceal and destroy evidence” linking Chinda to Miss McGraa and the crime.

Ian Duguid QC, defending, pled not guilty on his behalf during a short hearing at the High Court in Glasgow.

Judge Lady Rae set a trial due to begin in December. The case could last up to 10 days.

A man has gone on trial accused of murdering and raping an escort girl in a city-centre apartment. Bala Chinda is accused of inflicting blunt force trauma to Jessica McGraa’s head, compressing her neck, forcing her face into a pillow and asphyxiating her.

The 26-year-old is also accused of holding her down on a bed and raping her at a property in Aberdeen’s Union Terrace on February 11 last year. He faces further allegations that he stole a key and two mobile phones from 36-year-old Miss McGraa, and disposed of his own handset in attempt to defeat the ends of justice.

On the opening day of his trial at the High Court in Aberdeen, jurors heard she phoned the student she had been seeing shortly before her death. Twenty-one-year-old Patrick Dignam told the court he believed Miss McGraa was in Inverness, but found out from her friend that she was in Aberdeen when he tried to get in touch with her later.

Mr Dignam, from Belfast said he met Miss McGraa in November 2015 at a pub in the city in Northern Ireland. He said that they started seeing each other, and although the mum was “always” away, they were in regular contact. Mr Dignam said he told him she sold hair extensions for a living and had her own shop in London. He said it was not until after her death that he discovered she was an escort.

Advocate depute Paul Kearney, prosecuting, asked him about a phone call he had with Miss McGraa on February 11.

Mr Dignam said it was around noon and he had been in his bed. He said: “She was with another fella, I was just awake and sort of annoyed, after a few seconds I hung up on her.”

A man accused of raping and murdering an escort girl was caught on CCTV walking towards her flat on the day prosecutors allege she was killed.

Bala Chinda is on trial at the High Court in Aberdeen accused of inflicting blunt force trauma to Jessica McGraa’s head, compressing her neck, forcing her face into a pillow and asphyxiating her.

Yesterday, on the second day of his trial, jurors were shown CCTV images of the last time Miss McGraa was seen alive – the day before her body was found. Detective Constable Christine White told the court she had been involved in compiling various CCTV clips.

The court was shown footage of a male – identified in court by DC White as Chinda – walking towards the flat in Union Terrace where Miss McGraa was staying on February 11 at 11.08am.

Just over an hour-and-a-half later, footage shows them both walking from the direction of the address into a taxi outside. A series of clips then trace the route of the car before it stops at student accommodation at 256 King Street.

An escort girl found dead in a city-centre flat asked a man when she would “get her £400” during a taxi journey through Aberdeen. Jurors at the High Court in Aberdeen heard evidence from cabbie George Greig on the third day of the trial of 26-year-old Bala Chinda.

He is accused of murdering Jessica McGraa by inflicting blunt force trauma to her head, compressing her neck, forcing her face into a pillow and asphyxiating her. He is also accused of holding her down on a bed and raping her at a property in Aberdeen’s Union Terrace on February 11 last year.

He faces further charges that he stole a key and two mobile phones from 36-year-old Miss McGraa, and disposed of his own handset in attempt to defeat the ends of justice.

Mr Greig told the court yesterday that he picked up a woman and a man from Union Terrace on February 11 last year, and that the taxi was dispatched at 12.34pm, with the fare completed by 1.02pm. He said he drove the pair to student accommodation at King Street, stopping for a few minutes while the man got out, and then back in again, before driving back towards Union Terrace and dropping them off.

A statement he gave to police after Miss McGraa’s body was found was read out in court. In it he stated: “At some point during that part of the journey I remember the lassie saying to him about when she would get her £400. I do not remember what he said in return. He said something, but I do not know what.” He also described the woman as being on her phone as they drove back to Union Terrace.
