New investigation over missing Swindon prostitute

Postby admin » 17 Nov 2014, 19:01

Detectives in Wiltshire have begun a murder investigation following the disappearance of a woman nearly 20 years ago. Sally Ann John was 23 when she went missing from her home town of Swindon. Today police said that following a review of evidence they were now treating the case as murder.

When she vanished back in 1995 her family were distraught. They knew that Sally had been working as a prostitute. They feared the worst.

At the time Sally's mother, Lesley John, told ITV News: "What are my worries now? That she has been harmed somewhere. Do you think she might have been taken by a client? I think so."

Today, back in the street in Swindon where she was last seen alive, the police said they want help from the public. Detective Inspector Tim Corner said: "We are confident that people who think they have information will come forward."

Detectives say they are not linking the case to Christopher Halliwell, who is serving a life sentence for murdering nightclubber Sian O'Callaghan in 2002. Last week the house where he used to live was searched by forty specialist officers. "We keep an open mind to every investigation we undertake, murder or otherwise. We are not connecting the two at the moment."

A house is being searched by police investigating the disappearance of a woman 20 years ago. Sally Ann John was working as a prostitute when she went missing from Swindon, aged 23, in 1995. She was initially classified as a missing person but police launched a murder investigation last year.

The house officers are focusing their search on is in Kimmeridge Close, in the Nythe area of Swindon, which was Ms John's last-known address.

The case was reopened in November by Wiltshire Police who said they had "significant new information".

Det Ch Insp Jeremy Carter said officers are focussing their search on the property. "Although it was searched as part of the missing person inquiry which was initially launched in 1995, the property will now be forensically searched by specialist officers," he said. "I anticipate the searches to take approximately a week but this will depend on a number of factors. "[But] I would like to emphasise that the present occupant of the property is in no way linked to the investigation."

Ms John was last seen on Aylesbury Street at 10:45 BST on Friday 8 September 1995.

Police investigating the disappearance of a woman 20 years ago have concluded a search of a house. Sally Ann John was working as a prostitute when she went missing from Swindon, aged 23, in 1995. She was initially classified as a missing person but police launched a murder investigation last year.

Specialist officers and blood dogs focused their three-day search at her last-known address in Kimmeridge Close, in the Nythe area of Swindon.

Det Ch Insp Jeremy Carter said he was "feeling increasingly positive following the searches at the property". The case was reopened in November by Wiltshire Police, who said they had "significant new information".

Det Ch Insp Carter said ground penetrating radar search techniques had also been used. He said: "Items of note have been discovered and we are currently considering the best course with regards to further examination. The search in this location has been completed and I am now taking expert advice on what further examination is required of several items found.

"The search at this location may have ended but we are following a number of new lines of inquiry and I am positive that we are now closer to discovering the truth."

The mother of a woman who went missing 20 years ago and is believed to have been murdered has said the recent arrests have given her hope. Sally Ann John, who disappeared from Swindon, aged 23, in 1995, had been working as a prostitute.

On Thursday police arrested three men in their 50s on suspicion of her murder.

"Every day is difficult without Sally Ann and I appreciate the understanding I have been shown," said Lesley John.

In a statement released through Wiltshire Police, she said: "The police have been keeping me informed of progress with the investigation into Sally Ann's disappearance and the arrests yesterday give me hope. I feel it is important that the police are able to continue to investigate without speculation from anyone and I hope that the community will support me in this."

The trio, including two men from Swindon aged 50 and 52, and a 52-year-old from Chippenham, are still being held on suspicion of kidnap and murder.

Murder detectives probing the case of a prostitute who went missing 20 years ago have uncovered new evidence that could help solve the mystery.

Sally Ann John was working in Swindon's red light district when she vanished aged 23 on September 8 1995.

Her disappearance was initially treated as a missing person's inquiry but detectives launched a murder investigation in 2014.

Now police have unearthed a postcard they believe was sent from London by an unknown person pretending to be Miss John.

Wiltshire Police told MailOnline they had the letter analysed by a handwriting expert who said it was not written by the young prostitute.

This suggests that somebody was trying to cover their tracks by forging a letter - presumably to make her family believe she was alive and well in the capital.

But police do not know who sent the letter meaning their hunt for a main suspect goes on.
