Big turnout to discuss prostitution on the streets of Ilford

Postby admin » 29 Jun 2012, 18:11

More than 150 people turned out for a meeting on prostitution to voice their concerns over the impact it is having on Redbridge. Researchers from charity Eaves, which helps vulnerable women escape violence, gathered residents’ views on the problem. The project was commissioned by the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, with residents split into groups and asked about the sex trade in the area, particularly around Ilford Lane.

Chairman of Loxford Safer Neighbourhood Ward Panel, Pat Miller, 55, of Mayville Road, Ilford, said: “I think it’s disgusting to see the girls hanging around on the streets at 8pm at night. One lady told me she was sitting in her car with her husband and the prostitute didn’t mind. She was there asking him if he wanted business.”

The charity is visiting five boroughs in London deemed to be prostitution hotspots and the findings will then be presented to the Mayor’s office in August.

Mrs Miller said: “At 2am outside one woman’s house there was a fight between a prostitute and her client because he didn’t get his money’s worth. He was hollering ‘give me my money back’. By the time the police arrived they were gone, him with a bloody mouth.”

The meeting was held at Ilford Methodist Church, Britannia Road, on Tuesday of last week.

An issue repeatedly mentioned was parents’ concern over the impact prostitution was having on their children. Loxford ward councillor Filly Maravala said: “One parent said her child actually picked up a condom and thought it was a balloon and then she had to explain what it was.” He continued: “Another said they couldn’t send their 14-year-old daughter to the shops without her being accosted.”

What it’s like to be a prostitute in Ilford

Postby admin » 04 Oct 2012, 20:04

It’s 3.30 in the morning and prostitute Megan has just told me she’s worried about us getting beaten up as her heroin dealer’s about to arrive. She has just been pulled over by undercover officers for loitering and two police cars are flanking us in Lowbrook Road, Ilford. She’s worried that if her dealer sees her talking to the police he’ll think she has tried to get him into trouble.

Megan – not her real name – became a prostitute at the age of 13 after being sexually abused by her brother, step-dad and a family friend and works to feed her crack and heroine addiction.

It’s freezing cold and despite the fact that I’m wearing two pairs of socks, boots, a huge coat and, I’ll admit, a thermal vest, I’m shivering. However 34-year-old Megan, who’s clad in a low cut short dress and lacy tights, seems impervious to the cold. She’s one of numerous girls out working the streets playing an elaborate game of cat and mouse with the police.

London Assembly calls for camera cars to tackle prostitution

Postby admin » 02 Nov 2012, 21:25

Kerb crawlers, drug dealers and prostitutes in Redbridge are the target of a bid for special police camera cars being bought by London Mayor Boris Johnson. Roger Evans, London Assembly member for Havering and Redbridge, is asking for the cameras to be used in Loxford ward to combat prostitution in Ilford’s “red light district”.

They use automatic number plate recognition which could be used for identifying kerb crawlers and drug dealers. Before making the bid, Mr Evans was shown around the Ilford Lane area by Cllr Filly Maravala who took him to areas where anti-social behaviour happened.

Mr Evans said: “Local residents are very concerned about it and it disrupts the people who live there. People are not happy with the situation, we need measures in place to encourage the prostitutes to get out of that life.” At this stage, Mr Evans said no one else had made an early bid for the use of the new vehicles. “I understand that Boris said we are getting lots more vehicles for the police with the cameras in them, I’d like to see some of those deployed in Loxford,” he said. I’ve put an early bid in for it. We have to have the resources in Redbridge to be able to deal with it.”

Redbridge police have ‘more to do’ in targeting prostitution

Postby admin » 13 Dec 2012, 21:18

Eight arrests and 12 cautions were given out during a police operation targeting prostitution in Ilford.

During Operation Clearlight there were also arrests for drug offences and drink-driving as well as two kerb-crawlers being given acceptable behaviour contracts.

Sgt Lee Wilkinson, of Loxford Safer Neighbourhood Team, said: “It has a positive impact but there are still problems and we know there’s still more work to do.”

Mr Wilkinson said that a prostitute had been given an antisocial behaviour order and was banned from Loxford or Clementswood for two years.

Ilford green space to be fenced off in face of prostitution

Postby admin » 14 Dec 2012, 21:22

Prostitutes, people drinking until the early hours of the morning and blaring music in a small park mean it will now be fenced off.

One resident said the green space at the end of Norman Road and Ilford Lane, Ilford was a “shambles” and she had to call the police every night. The resident who only wanted to be known as Heidi due to fear of retribution said: she said: “We really are suffering here, we are all suffering. It’s been going on for four years, people drinking until four in the morning and playing music from their cars. I used to ring the police every day.”

Vast amounts of litter which includes bottles, needles and used condoms have to be cleaned up every day from the area. Heidi, 63, said: “They throw everything onto the floor, it’s a shambles. Prostitutes use the park and leave condoms on the floor. My neighbour found condoms outside his house. Sometimes there are so many people in the park you cannot even walk through it.”

Documentary binned after reaction from Ilford shopkeepers

Postby admin » 18 Jan 2013, 17:57

A meeting was held on Sunday for residents and business owners to raise their objections to the documentary, which was due to be filmed this weekend. In light of the heated debate filming is not going ahead.

The meeting was chaired by Abdula Razzaq, chairman of the Loxford Ward Labour Party. Mr Razzaq, 59, said: “The problem is everywhere, it’s a local issue and it needs to be dealt with locally by police and the local authority. Yes there is a problem and the more it’s publicised the more people will come here.”

He said one of the reasons they did not want the issue televised is the impact it would have on people considering moving to the area and property values. “It will become a red light area for the next 10 years,” Mr Razzaq said: “It effects the community and house prices will go down and ruin the area because it’s a write off. We don’t want it to be a national issue.”

About 50 people attended the meeting, which was held at the League of British Muslims UK Ilford Community Centre, Eton Road, Ilford.

Concern over the impact on local businesses was something echoed by Khalid Hussain, chairman of the South Ilford Business Association. Mr Hussain said: “It will give us a bad reference for the shopkeeper and the business there. I don’t want to have unnecessary advertisements. People will think it’s not safe, they will stop their families from shopping here.”

Prostitution in Ilford Lane, Ilford has been a long running issue with residents demanding more to be done to combat the problem.

Prostitute cautions in Loxford up almost 70 per cent in 2012

Postby admin » 29 Jan 2013, 22:31

There was an increase of almost 70 per cent in the number of prostitute cautions issued by the Loxford police team last year.

In 2012, Loxford Safer Neighbourhood Team issued 232 cautions to prostitutes, up from 138 the previous year, an increase of 68 per cent.

The rise is partially explained by proactive action by the police team including Operation Clear Light, which has resulted in 32 arrests.

The team also targeted burglaries in the ward, resulting in a 17 per cent reduction in burglary last year compared to 2011.

If this is the Loxford area in Ilford/barking area in east london I used to live there and it is a total dump ! I lived there when my daughter was first born 16 years ago and you couldnt go to the shop without tripping over a hooker, they were mostly in flats on the social working while their kids were in the premises and bringing huge trouble to the area, I suspect lot of them were working for pimps and had drug problems etc but an awful place to live , seems like nothing has changed in all these years, xxxx

Just to add something else as someone mentioned in another thread about the sexual repression in asian communities the Loxford area is mainly an asian community and I think the demand for low rent girls or street girls is in high demand there from these specific communities due to their sexual culture , i still live very close to Ilford lane and have been approached by asian men myself just walking to the shops in normal everyday clothes, Ilford lane is full of brothels with what I beleive to be very young girls who are being controlled through drugs ,

Police extend Ilford dispersal zone to combat prostitution

The dispersal zone which previously only covered the Loxford side of Ilford Lane, Ilford has been extended to include the Clementswood side as well.

The dispersal zone allows police to tell individuals to leave a certain area and is often used to target prostitution and anti-social behaviour.

Sgt Lee Wilkinson from Loxford Safer Neighbourhood Team said that Operation Clearlight would continue for the foreseeable future.

The operation tackles prostitution and anti-social behaviour and over the 23 nights it has been run has resulted in more than 40 arrests.

Mr Wilkinson said: “We have made arrests for a range of offences, it’s been quite a positive operation but we still accept there’s more work to do, we are keen to tackle it.”
