Prostitute in 20-road night ban Asbo

A PROSTITUTE has become the first sex worker in Barking and Dagenham to be given an antisocial behaviour order. Emma Perry, 30, was handed an Asbo stopping her plying her trade in Barking's red light district around Tanner Street, Fanshawe Avenue and Ilford Lane for two years. Perry, of Lullington Road, Dagenham, could receive a custodial sentence if caught and police are warning more orders could be issued.

Sgt Richard Morgan, of Abbey Safer Neighbourhood Team, said: "We've had kerb-crawling operations. The problem hasn't gone away yet but it has reduced to a certain extent, where people have been arrested.

"One has an interim Asbo at the moment. This is a tactic we are going to keep using. The problem in Barking and Dagenham is mainly two or three girls, not all at the same time. It's quite sporadic."

Perry was handed the post conviction Asbo at Barking Magistrate's Court on October 16 after two warnings. She will not be able to enter the red light district between 7pm-6am. Similar anti-prostitution Asbos have already been used elsewhere in the Met and other parts of the country.

Sgt Morgan added: "The problem has quietened down. Ilford is quite busy towards the town centre, but they're not out every night - it depends on the weather that night."

The prohibited roads are Ilford Lane, Tanner Street, Fanshawe Avenue, Loxford Lane, St Thomas Gardens, Roman Road, Uphall Road, Victoria Road, Loxford Road, Loftus Road, Church Road, Pickering Road, Harpour Road, Glenny Road, Heenan Close, Bateman Close, Bamford Road, Monteagle Avenue, Park Avenue and Faircross Avenue.

ILFORD: Arrests made during prostitution crackdown

Postby admin » 24 May 2010, 21:01

TWELVE prostitutes were cautioned by police during a crackdown in Redbridge.

Officers from Loxford Safer Neighbourhood Team issued the warnings during an operation run in the Ilford Lane area of Loxford from Thursday May 20 to Saturday May 22.

A police spokeswoman said the initiative, which took place between 6pm and 2am each evening, also involved officers dealing with incidents of 'rowdyism' and possession of drugs - with two people arrested for other offences.

ILFORD: Police target customers in crackdown

Postby admin » 11 Aug 2010, 18:33

MEN who trawl the streets looking to pay for sex will be targeted during a new crackdown on prostitution this month. Throughout August, officer from the Loxford Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT) will patrol Ilford Lane and the surrounding area to deter men from visiting the area to buy sex.

Officers say their approach will be overt and transparent, and will use CCTV to record men who they suspect are in the area for this reason.

The hope is that by depriving the prostitutes and their pimps of a steady supply of customers that they can flush them out from the area and reduce the level of anti social behaviour associated with the activity.

Ilford’s working girls given marching orders in crackdown

Postby admin » 09 Feb 2011, 19:17

SIXTY-six people were stopped and issued with tickets as part of the ongoing battle against prostitution in Loxford Lane. The area, which has been dubbed Ilford’s “red light district”, was targeted by plain clothes officers across two evenings last month.

Eighteen officers from Loxford’s Safer Neighbourhood Team, working with officers from Redbridge Council’s CCTV unit and antisocial behaviour team stormed the area, which has become a hotspot for night workers, in the latest in a series of late night operations.

The operation was organised by Sgt Douglas Fyfe, from the Loxford SNT, as part of their proactive strategy to combat prostitution and kerb-crawling in Ilford Lane. “We had a very successful evening on this particular crackdown,” he said. “We issued 17 tickets for people using threatening words and behaviour, and arrested 12 women for alleged prostitution. The message I would like to get across is if you are involved in prostitution and kerb-crawling in Ilford Lane, you can expect to be seeing us at the police station in the very near future.”

Ilford anti-prostitution petition for more police action

Postby admin » 26 Jul 2011, 21:29

A petition urging police to take notice of the nightly prostitution occurring in Ilford Lane is expected to collect more than 3,000 signatures.
Launched by Labour ward Cllr Filly Maravala, the petition is set to be presented to the council during the next full council meeting in September.

“The residents are just sick of it,” he said. “They leave mess and it’s intimidating for anyone who passes there.”
Despite a crackdown last year in which trees were cut away to leave the area more exposed and extra lighting was put in place, the problem has still been rife.

Cllr Maravala said that he and other ward councillors have been knocking on doors and have gained support from residents, many of who had signed the petition.

Petition over Loxford Lane prostitutes

Postby admin » 12 Sep 2011, 19:23

Led by Cllr Filly Maravala, the petition will be presented to Redbridge Council later this year.

Parts of Loxford Lane and Mortlake Road, Ilford are used nightly by kerb crawlers, which residents complain creates noise and rubbish is often left by prostitutes.

Cllr Maravala said: “I’ve been out day and night, weekends, at all times to get this petition ready.

“The people of Ilford don’t deserve this. Families’ lives are being made a misery by these inconsiderate people.”
Last year, police and Redbridge Council worked together to cut back trees and plants in the area to open it up and make it harder for prostitutes to hide from authorities.

I now have a very funny image in my mind of a sterotypical prostitute hiding in a tree, clinging precariously to the branches while her stiletto heel threatens to drop off, just as two stern-looking bobbies patrol past, twirling their batons.

Prostitution crackdown in Redbridge declared a success

Postby admin » 29 Nov 2011, 21:03

Police have arrested eight prostitutes, two kerb crawlers and issued 57 cautions as part of a crackdown on vice in the London borough of Redbridge. The arrests are the result of a month-long campaign involving the police, council and housing organisations to tackle prostitution in the area.

The joint approach is having a big impact and has seen seven known prostitutes given anti-social behaviour orders (ASBO) which prohibits them from entering Loxford or Clementswood wards. Breach of an ASBO can lead to a prison sentence.

Three of the arrests and two of the cautions were made by the council’s new Redbridge Community Police Team. The new team help the Council’s Enforcement Teams deal with issues in the Borough as well as patrolling open spaces and parks.

Men arrested in Ilford kerb-crawling crackdown

Postby admin » 02 Jan 2012, 20:00

Loxford Safer Neighbourhood Team and the Area Three Territorial Support Group launched a pro-active kerb crawling operation in Ilford Lane to address the issue.

Operation Street was specifically to target men who use prostitutes’ services, and 11 men were arrested over the course of two days.
All were later charged and will be appearing in court this month.

The operation is the third one of its kind that the team have conducted in the last three months, and as a result of these, 100 prostitute cautions have been issued, 12 have been arrested and charged, seven have been issued with anti-social behaviour orders in court and 13 are due to appear in court this month.

Ilford prostitutes forced off street by dispersal order

Postby admin » 02 Feb 2012, 21:00

Prostitutes in Ilford could be forced to move on permanently if a dispersal order is given the go-ahead. A dispersal order would allow officers to intervene when groups of two or more people are causing, or are likely to cause a member of public to be harassed, intimidated, alarmed or distressed, and those who do not live in the area can be ordered to stay away for 24 hours.

But Cllr Filly Maravala said: “We have been told it’s on the way, and then that it’s not. “I don’t know why the statutory authorities are dragging their heels over this.”

Latest police figures revealed at an area committee six meeting in South Park Primary School, Water Lane, Seven Kings on Wednesday of last week, show that from October to January 20, police have arrested 12 prostitutes, 13 kerb-crawlers and issued 100 prostitute cautions.

Antisocial behaviour contracts have been given to 42 kerb-crawlers, which ban them from visiting areas in Redbridge used by prostitutes without a legitimate reason, including off Ilford Lane.

Ilford: Police action against kerb-crawlers and prostitutes

Postby admin » 01 Mar 2012, 19:00

Police stopped nine kerb-crawlers at the weekend and issued cautions to 23 prostitutes during a crackdown in Ilford. Officers held a two-day operation in the Redbridge’s Loxford ward, focusing on Ilford Lane, Ilford, in plain clothes and uniform.

The nine kerb-crawlers received anti-social behaviour contracts and six prohibition notices were also issued. There was also an arrest for drink-driving. Safer Neighbourhood officers based in the south of the borough were acting as part of the Met-wide Operation Condor, which investigates unlicensed premises.

Prostitutes in Ilford could be forced to move on if Redbridge Council is successful in putting together a dispersal zone application.

Police granted new powers to combat prostitution in Ilford

Postby admin » 23 Mar 2012, 20:33

Police have been granted powers to move people away from Ilford Lane and surrounding areas in a bid to tackle prostitution. Redbridge Council has given permission for a dispersal zone to be set up around the area which means the police can move on groups of two or more people.

The move was welcomed as a positive step by the borough Commander Sue Williams and councillors in tackling the problem, which prompted a 2,528 strong petition from Loxford residents in November.

The zone will be in place for six months after which it will be reviewed. Det Ch Supt Williams said: “It’s very positive to see a dispersal zone in this area as it allows the police to easily move people on, whether they be prostitutes, pimps or kerb crawlers, and help rid the area of this kind of activity.” Cllr Shoaib Patel, the cabinet member for environment and community safety, said, “This is another step in the right direction.”

‘Lack of progress’ ridding Ilford of prostitution

Postby admin » 26 Apr 2012, 19:10

A councillor was left disappointed at the lack of progress regarding prostitution in Loxford. Cllr Filly Maravala, who has campaigned to end the activity in and around Loxford, called for action at cabinet.

The scrutiny committee believes a sustained initiative is needed to reduce and eventually eradicate the problem that is said to heavily affect Ilford Lane.

Cllr Maravala said: “I am slightly disappointed as residents are still suffering and all you can see is prostitution paraphernalia. I want the council to make a large contribution to eradicate the problem.”

Cabinet has asked for time to consider the recommendations presented by the scrutiny committee, which include an appeal to Home Secretary Theresa May for extra resources.

Prostitution in Redbridge still a major problem for resident

Postby admin » 13 Jun 2012, 18:33

Despite efforts to tackle the problem of prostitution in Redbridge, the situation has not improved according to concerned residents and councillors. Prostitution in the Loxford area was the focus at Redbridge Town Hall, High Road, Ilford yesterday evening when four public speakers and Cllr Filly Maravala, a Labour councillor for Loxford ward, addressed the cabinet on the matter.

One member of the public said: “I have lived in Ilford Lane for 35 years and this problem has made my life intolerable. We need the financial resources from the Mayor of London and the secretary of state to take notice and to help Cllr Maravala because he can’t do it on his own.”

Another member of the public, who’s 16-year-old daughter has been approached by men in the past, said: “I live in absolute fear of prostitution and it is getting worse. “When I walk home I will no doubt see this happening with men making no attempt to hide. More should be done to name and shame.” A member of the public also added: “There is talk of rescuing the girls but the residents are the victims too.”
