Brothel listed as beauty salon on council website

Postby admin » 13 May 2010, 19:44

A council has taken legal action against a woman who ran a brothel and listed it as a beauty salon on the council's own website. Joanne Andrew, 42, ran Natalie's Sauna, in Cookson Street, Blackpool. She admitted four counts of keeping a brothel for prostitution at the town's magistrates' court on Wednesday.

Blackpool Council said it has removed the "Where I live and work" section from its website, where the brothel was listed, pending an investigation.

blackpool brothel was big business

Postby triple h » 02 Aug 2010, 09:07

A MADAM has walked free from court despite admitting running a brothel. Joanne Andrew, the owner of Natalies Sauna on Cookson Street, appeared in court to admit four charges relating to the premises last month and was sentenced to 36 weeks in prison, suspended for 12 months, at Lancaster Crown Court.

Andrew, 42, of Brun Grove, Marton, must also perform 80 hours unpaid work in the community as part of her sentence. Blackpool Council today called Andrew's operation "big business" and said they would be ready to swoop if she breached the conditions of her sentence to ensure she was thrown behind bars.

Head of trading standards Tim Coglan added: "This is a high priority premises and one which we will be keeping an eye on to make sure it adheres to the conditions of the sentence. We're aware there have been a number of girls working on the premises on a rota system.

"It's open 24 hours a day, seven days a week and has a large amount of cash going through the premises. That means it's big business and we intend to go after them to recover the proceeds of crime. We will look to do that with any criminal enterprise to make sure these people are not profiting from those businesses."

A WOMAN convicted of running a Blackpool brothel is facing allegations under the Health and Safety Act.

Joanne Andrews of Natalie's Sauna on Cookson Street in central Blackpool faces three charges of failing to have provide the council with an inspection certificate, failing to show gas appliances had been tested and failing to deep clean the walls of the sauna.

Andrews, 40, did not attend court and Blackpool Magistrates issued a warrant for her arrest.

Brothel boss wins cash claim battle

Postby admin » 17 Mar 2011, 20:39

A BLACKPOOL woman has won her battle against a proceeds of crime application involving £963,000. A court was told proceedings against Joanne Andrew, of Brun Grove, South Shore, had been halted at Lancaster Crown Court. The decision was revealed when 43-year-old Andrew appeared before District Judge Jeff Brailsford sitting at Blackpool Magistrates Court.

Andrew was last year convicted of running a brothel at Natalie’s Sauna on Topping Street. Her latest appearance involved driving matters. She pleaded guilty to driving without insurance and driving while using a mobile phone on Topping Street.

She was fined a total a £250 after the court was told by her lawyer Trevor Colebourne a Proceeds of Crime Application (POCA) involving the alleged £963,000 earned from running the brothel had been withdrawn.

Not sure why its called a win when the claim has been withdrawn by the prosecution. Would be interested to know why the claim was withdrawn.

THE owner of a sauna in Blackpool’s red light district failed to complete court ordered unpaid work for the community. Joanne Andrew, 44, of Brun Grove, Marton, admitted breaching a court order.

District Judge Rod Ross, sitting at Blackpool Magistrates’ Court, was told how in 2010 Andrew was sentenced to do 100 hours unpaid work for breaching health and safety laws at a sauna she was running at the time. She completed 60 hours of the work then failed to keep appointments.

A court then ordered her to complete the remaining 40 hours unpaid work.

A probation officer said Andrew did not keep appointments and had not done any of the 40 hours work.

Trevor Colebourne, defending, said the breaches of health and safety at the sauna his client once ran in the red light district of Blackpool had involved only minor matters, such as a heater not working, and the defects had been repaired quickly.

Andrew said she owned the building the sauna was in and now rented the sauna out. She added she had been unable to do the unpaid work as she was a single parent and had to take her son too and from school.

She was sentenced to four weeks imprisonment suspended for six months, made the subject of a residency order requiring her to live at her given address for 12 weeks and told to pay £50 costs by the judge.

A brothel in Blackpool has been allowed to remain open after a 16-year-old runaway schoolgirl was found working there for £400 ($495) a night. The girl, who cannot be named for legal reasons, ran away from her home in Stockport, Greater Manchester, and was discovered hiding under a blanket during a police raid last month.

She first visited Natalie's Sauna in Cookson Street to hire a sunbed and asked during the visit if she could have a job.

A worker told her the business was a massage parlour and what went on there, but that did not deter the girl, who claimed she was 18 and wore lingerie while she worked.

Police were tipped off the girl might be a missing person and conducted the raid, finding her hiding in an office when police arrived.

Manager Heather Meehan told the hearing how the girl came to work there.

"I told her it was a massage parlour and what we did. She then asked for a job and I took some details," said Meehan. "I am not a manageress I am just a working girl. It was my fault she did a shift and it won't happen again."

The business was closed for two weeks but at a court hearing, Lancashire Police were unable to get it shut for longer after claiming the premises were used for child prostitution, child sex offences and pornography.
