Michaela murder hunt police in new appeal

From The Sheffield Star

DETECTIVES investigating the murder of Sheffield prostitute Michaela Hague are using the seventh anniversary to appeal for information to help them nail the killer. A review of the case is also underway with police hopeful that advances in forensic and DNA technology will help them finally crack the case.

They have been hunting the man who killed 25-year-old Michaela since Bonfire Night 2001, when he picked her up from a street corner on Bower Street, off Corporation Street, and took her to a secluded car park on nearby Spitalfields. He stabbed her 19 times in the back and neck and left her dying in a pool of blood, where she was found by another prostitute who raised the alarm.

She told police she believed the killer was driving an old blue Ford Sierra, prompting a nationwide hunt for the car. Mum-of-one Michaela managed to give the first police officer on the scene a description of her killer before she died in the Northern General Hospital.

Chief Superintendent Paul Broadbent, responsible for policing Sheffield, was the detective in charge of the murder probe and remains responsible for the case. "I will keep this case until we get justice for Michaela and her family," he said. "From time to time information comes in, which I am always informed of, which we assess and work through looking for new lines of enquiry. We are currently reviewing the case and are hopeful that advances in forensic and DNA technology may provide us with new opportunities"

He said there was no evidence to suggest Michaela's killer had struck in Sheffield since, and a national police review of all the country's unsolved prostitute murders – including Michaela's – concluded there was not one serial killer on the loose.

Michaela's unsolved murder came seven years after the body of 19-year-old prostitute Dawn Shields was found in a shallow grave on Mam Tor in the Peak District. She had been stripped and strangled before her body was dumped.

Anyone with information about Michaela's murder should call South Yorkshire Police on 0114 220 2020.

From The Sheffield Star

THIS sex offender, branded a danger to women, is wanted by police over the murder of Sheffield prostitute Michaela Hague. Peter McDonagh, aged 44, went to ground from a hostel in West Yorkshire last Wednesday.

Today police officers hunting him have revealed that, during their search, evidence has emerged linking him with the murder of 25-year-old Michaela Hague on Bonfire Night 2001.

McDonagh is a known serial sex attacker, listed on the sex offenders' register, who has a history of targeting women and has struck in the UK and Ireland. Since he went missing last week he has been spotted in Carlisle and Aberdeen, but his current whereabouts are unknown. Police are warning that he is a danger, particularly to women.

Detective Superintendent Paul Taylor of West Yorkshire Police said: "Peter McDonagh is a registered sex offender who went missing from a West Yorkshire hostel on February 11. McDonagh is also wanted in connection with the murder of Michaela Hague, who was stabbed to death in Sheffield. We are obviously keen to trace him, as we believe he may have vital information in respect of that murder inquiry."

McDonagh had been living in the West Yorkshire hostel since September last year, when he was released from serving half of an eight-year prison sentence for a knifepoint rape on a woman in Leeds in 2002. He also has previous convictions for offences committed in York and Ireland.

In 2001 he was convicted of the false imprisonment of a woman, for which he received a two-year sentence, and in 1997 he indecently assaulted a hitchhiker he had picked up.

McDonagh is white, 5ft 11ins tall, stocky, and speaks with an Irish accent. He was last seen with a full, long beard and moustache and wearing glasses.

When he went missing, McDonagh left behind medication and police claim his behaviour is likely to be much more unpredictable without it. Police say he may be a danger to himself as well as to women.

An incident room, staffed by officers from West Yorkshire and South Yorkshire Police, has been set up. Anyone who spots McDonagh should not approach him but should instead call 999, the incident room on 01274 373 737, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

From The BBC

Police hunting a dangerous sex offender who has been on the run for two weeks have received more than 50 reported sightings of him from the public.

However, they said there were "no major new leads" in the search for Peter McDonagh, 44, who went missing from a West Yorkshire hostel on 11 February.

Police said people had reported sightings from all over the country.

They want to question McDonagh over the murder of prostitute Michaela Hague, 25, in Sheffield on 5 November 2001.

She was found dying at Spital Fields after being stabbed in the neck and back at least nine times.

McDonagh has been spotted in Manchester, Carlisle and Aberdeen since going missing.

Det Supt Paul Taylor said: "We've had a good response from members of the public and have received in excess of 50 calls to the incident room, but unfortunately we have had no major developments."

McDonagh was jailed for raping a woman in 2002

The sightings had come from all over the country, several of them in Aberdeen

From The Yorkshire Post

AN on-the-run sex offender wanted in connection with the murder of a Yorkshire prostitute was tonight in police custody. Peter McDonagh, 44, walked into a police station in Canterbury, Kent, to hand himself in.

Police had warned that McDonagh was a danger to women after he had disappeared from a bail hostel in the West Yorkshire area more than two weeks ago.

The convicted rapist will now be quizzed by South Yorkshire detectives investigating the murder of Sheffield prostitute Michaela Hague.

A West Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said: "Officers looking for missing sex offender Peter McDonagh have now arrested a 44-year-old man, who handed himself in to a station in Canterbury, Kent. He will now be transported to a police station in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, where he will be questioned. We would like to thank members of the public and the media for their assistance."

Miss Hague, 25, was brutally stabbed to death during a frenzied attack in Sheffield more than seven years ago. The mother-of-one was stabbed 19 times in her back and neck when the killer struck on November 5, 2001, in a secluded car park. As she lay dying in the arms of a police officer she gave a description of the man who had attacked her.

Earlier this week police warned the public not to approach the "unpredictable" McDonagh and released pictures of him in an effort to find him. West Yorkshire Police took the unusual step of appealing for help in tracing him, after branding him a danger, particularly to women.

McDonagh was released from prison in September 2008 after serving an eight-year sentence for a knifepoint rape committed in the Holbeck area of Leeds in 2002. He also has previous convictions for offences committed in York and Ireland.

There had been positive sightings of McDonagh outside Manchester Piccadilly Station on February 11, where he took a taxi to Carlisle. He was then believed to have stayed overnight in Carlisle before travelling to Aberdeen by train, arriving there at around midday.

However, the manhunt came to an end today when McDonagh walked into a police station in Kent.

Michaela Hague murder: 10-year anniversary appeal

Postby admin » 03 Nov 2011, 19:04

The partner of a murdered mother from Sheffield has made a fresh appeal to catch her killer. Michaela Hague was stabbed and left for dead on waste ground in Spitalfields on 5 November 2001. She is thought to have been working as a prostitute. Miss Hague's partner, Mick Holmes, said her death had "destroyed" him, his son and Miss Hague's family.

Mr Holmes asked anyone who knew about Miss Hague's murderer to come forward, saying: "Give him up. He's a killer. He's had 10 years of freedom he should never have had," he added. Mr Holmes said that his son never had the chance to be brought up by his mother. "One minute she was setting off fireworks, the next minute she was gone forever," he said.

Miss Hague, 25, was found semi-conscious by a friend shortly after 20:00 GMT in a secluded car park. She had 19 stab wounds to her neck and back and died at the Northern General Hospital almost three hours later.

If 10 years on and there's been no repeat and no other ladies coming forward with suspicions, might this not point to someone close to her as opposed to a physco punter ?

Re: Michaela Hague murder: 10-year anniversary appeal

Postby natalie b » 04 Nov 2011, 13:25

she gave a description while dying if she knew the person i assume she would of named them it would of been less taxing than a description .................the guy could also have been filled with remorse( but not enough to hand himself in ) and suppresed his urges since ................but yes also could of been some one who knew her ( obsesion ) ...............but she wasn't aware of them and thats why she got in his car on the beat before he killed her .

(this was part of he artile that was missed out stats x )
PC Richard Twigg, the first officer on the scene, was able to record the killer's description from Miss Hague by writing on the palm of his hand. Miss Hague described the man who stabbed her as white, about 38 years old and clean shaven. She said he was about 6ft (1.8m) tall and he wore a blue fleece, glasses and a wedding ring.

Det Supt Lisa Ray, from South Yorkshire Police, said she had been looking very closely at the case as the 10th anniversary approached. She said: "We do have some DNA profiles and we are now working hard to try and identify whose DNA this is. We are looking for these people. It may be the offender or it may be witnesses."

Police believe Miss Hague, from Pitsmoor, was involved in street prostitution and was picked up in the Bower Street area some time after 19:00 GMT on the night of her death
